Willem Hoyng

Willem Hoyng is managing partner of Howrey in Europe. Willem’s practice primarily consists of litigating in the field of intellectual property law (in particular patent law and trademark law). Willem does so before all the national courts (the courts of first instance, the courts of appeals and the Supreme Court). He also regularly litigates before the European Court of Justice and the European Patent Office. Willem has a number of landmark decisions to his name, including Vredo/Veenhuis, BAT/Doucal, Van Bentum/Kool and Dijkstra/Saier.
Willem is also involved in advising on European patent strategies and coordinating and conducting European patent proceedings. He is the adviser of various innovative Dutch and foreign multinationals, including pharmaceutical and biotechnological companies.
Willem is a professor of Intellectual Property Law at the University of Tilburg and has written numerous publications on e.g. trademark law and licenses in bankruptcies. In 2002, Willem received the Wim Mak award for his article on the use of market research in legal actions involving trademark law. Before joining Howrey in 2003, Willem was a partner in De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek’s IP Department.
